WMU News:  Our January mission project was suggested by Sherri Barham of Tar
River Baptist.  She has a prison ministry in Raleigh and requested Little Debbie cakes
as snacks for some of her classes there.  Please join us in our collection for Little
Debbie cakes and giving to a much needed ministry.  Thank you for helping us serve
our Lord and doing his good works!

WMU Focus Sunday:  On Sunday, February 12th, guest speaker, Sherri Barham will
give our sermon for WMU Focus Week.  She serves as Tar River Baptist Association
Ministry Assistant.  She is a member of Pearce Baptist Church (Mark Cottrel, Pastor)
and has served in a variety of leadership positions in her church.  She has served
TRBA as a member of the Sunday School Council, Discipleship Team, and is an active
prayer warrior!  She is also engaged in a ministry to Women's Central Prison in
Raleigh.

                                                                 Dear First Baptist Spring Hope,

Greetings!  Kasey and I want to express our thanks
and gratitude to all who have helped with us moving
into the town of Spring Hope and becoming part of
the community.  We both know a great deal of work
went into the preparation for our arrival.  Thanks to all
of you who have made the transition smooth for us
getting acquainted to the community and showing us
                                                                 your love.

One way love is expressed throughout the Bible is by means of a covenant. A covenant is
an agreement between the relationships of two or more parties.  It is quite similar to how
we use contracts today.  However, covenantal relationships in Biblical times were
probably more serious than we think of contracts today. God established the first
covenant between Noah, his family, and all creation.  I preached on the covenant between
God and Abram, later to be called Abraham after the covenant was established.  Other
covenants are noted to be set between two parties of human beings in the Old Testament.

So, what does a covenant have to do with the church, or even February for that matter?
February is the month commonly associated with cold weather, celebrating a few
Presidents’ birthdays, and Valentine’s Day.  While we are buying our Valentine’s cards
and candy for our loved ones, let us think about the reason behind those purchases.  The
covenant we are most familiar with is between husbands and wives.  Are we buying treats
and cards out of reluctance, or is there a deeper meaning behind our actions?

In the New Testament, the church is commonly referred to as the bride of Christ.  When we
take communion, we do that in remembrance of the covenant established between God
and all humanity through Christ’s body and blood.  Just as in the Old Testament, God took
the initiative to make a new covenant through Christ to show God’s love to all people.
As we buy our candies and cards, let us not forget why we are giving the gifts.  Let’s allow
our love to overflow to our families, friends, and neighbors.  Love is abounding in the
church covenant we established when Kasey and I arrived.  Most importantly, remember
God’s new covenant of love expressed to us through Christ.  Take the time to love others,
but allow time to be loved, especially by God, in return.  I look forward to expressing all of
these forms of love as I serve and minister alongside you all.

  In Christ,

                                                                                        Kevin Moore
